What is Professional Indemnity Insurance?
Professional indemnity insurance is an essential cover in the world of business. It provides cover for claims of professional negligence resulting in financial loss for the claimant, including libel and slander, unintentional breach of confidentiality, infringement of intellectual property rights, dishonesty of employees, loss of documents and previous partners or firms. This means that, should you come face to face with a claim of this nature, if you had professional indemnity insurance in place, your insurer would cover the costs of defending the claim, and pay any damages awarded to the claimant.

Who needs Professional Indemnity Insurance?
Though not a legal requirement, professional indemnity insurance is an absolute necessity if your business provides advice, or handles data or intellectual property belonging to a client or business. It will protect against claims made for negligence or mistakes that leave a client out of pocket. It covers a wide breadth of professions and businesses, including consultants, architects, web developers, IT contractors, accountants and more.
Unfortunately, even if you’ve done nothing wrong, the cost of defending a claim like this can be incredibly high. Professional indemnity insurance provides an additional layer of protection against claims of this nature.
